Ancestral Rites — The Heart of the Kshetram
Pitru Karyam — the body of rites performed for the welfare and liberation of departed ancestors — is the primary purpose for which Sri Datta Mukti Kshetram was established. The Sanskrit word pitr covers all departed souls in one’s lineage: father, mother, grandparents, great-grandparents, and beyond, on both paternal and maternal sides.
The Dharma Shastras identify three debts (rnas) that every human being carries: Deva-rna (debt to the gods), Rshi-rna (debt to the sages), and Pitr-rna (debt to the ancestors). Failure to discharge the last creates pitr-dosha — ancestral affliction — manifesting in the living family as obstacles in marriage, progeny, health, and prosperity.
The Principal Rites
Tarpana: Periodic offering of water mixed with sesame (tila), kusha grass, and sandalwood to three tiers of ancestors. At the Godavari, even this simple rite carries extraordinary merit.
Pinda-dana: Offering of rice balls (pindas) formed with cooked rice, sesame, honey, and ghee. Each pinda represents a specific ancestor, offered with their name and gotra chanted aloud. The pindas are finally released into the sacred river.
Shraddha: The formal ancestral feast-rite performed on the death anniversary (tithi), new moon (Amavasya), and during the Mahalaya paksha (the 16-day ancestral fortnight in Bhadrapada). Shraddha involves the full sequence of tarpana, pinda-dana, Brahmana-bhojana (feeding scholars as representatives of the ancestors), and charitable gifts.
Narayana Bali: Performed for souls who died by accident, suicide, or in circumstances of great suffering, whose departure from the mortal world was therefore disturbed. This rite formally consigns such souls to Lord Narayana for liberation.

Any person who has not performed the annual shraddha for parents or grandparents; who is experiencing obstacles attributed to pitr-dosha; who has recently lost a family member and wishes to perform rites at a sacred tirtha; or who wishes to perform Mahalaya shraddha in a place of exceptional merit — all such persons are urged to visit Sri Datta Mukti Kshetram on Amavasya, during Pitr Paksha, or on any auspicious tithi.
